What are Saffron Threads
Saffron threads are the stigmas of the Crocus sativus flower, which are harvested and dried to make saffron spice. Each stigma is a tiny, bright red or orange filament about 2-4 cm long and 1-2 mm wide.
Saffron threads are prized for their distinct flavour, aroma, and colour, and are used as a seasoning and colouring agent in a variety of dishes, including rice dishes, soups, stews, and desserts. Saffron threads are typically used in small amounts in recipes because the flavour and colour of saffron are quite potent and can easily overpower other ingredients.
Saffron is one of the most expensive spices in the world, owing in part to the labour-intensive harvesting process. Each flower produces only three stigmas, and one kilogramme of dried saffron threads requires approximately 150,000 flowers.
